Gestern fanden in New York die MTV Video Music Awards statt. Wie wir alle wissen, ist die deutsche Presse in Sachen Musik (sofern es keine Fachseiten sind), eher nicht so bewandert. Deswegen bekommst du jetzt alles, was du über die gestrigen VMAs wirklich wissen musst.

Kommen wir erstmal zu den Sachen, über die alle schreiben werden. Madonna eröffnete überraschend die VMAs gestern Nacht mit den Worten: „Willkommen bei den VMAs 2021“. Nachdem sie ihr Outfit präsentierte fügte sie den Satz des Abends hinzu: „Sie haben gesagt, wir würden nicht durchhalten – aber wir sind immer noch hier! Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum 40. Geburtstag, MTV!“

Justin Bieber, der mit sieben Preischancen das Feld der Nominierten angeführt hatte, gewann in den Kategorien „Künstler des Jahres“ und „Best Pop“. „Best New Artist“ wurde die 18-jährige Sängerin Olivia Rodrigo und ihr Hit „drivers license“ wurde zum „besten Song 2021“ gekürt. Der begehrteste Preis, nämlich „Video des Jahres“, ging an Lil Nas X für „Montero (Call Me By Your Name)“. Billie Eilish, Travis Scott und Machine Gun Kelly konnten ebenfalls Preise mitnehmen.

Warum kenne ich so wenige Acts?

Wir leben nunmal in Streaming- und App-Zeitalter. Während Künstler früher auf weltweite Promo-Tour gingen und in Sendungen auftraten, die die ganze Familie schaute, sitzen die Kids heute vor ihrem Smartphone und kreieren ihre neuen Starts via TikTok, Spotify & Co. Und so kann es durchaus sein, dass Olivia Rodrigo, die mit „Good 4 U“ vor allem durch TikTok durch die Decke ging, sonst kaum jemand kennt, außer eben ihre Zielgruppe.

Doch kommen wir genau zu diesen Acts. Bei der Pre-Show (also dem Red Carpet) trat zum ersten mal die Kölnerin Kim Petras auf. In Deutschland wurde Kim als Jugendliche durch ihre früh entdeckte und behandelte Transidentität bekannt, während man sie musikalisch hier gar nicht auf dem Schirm hat. Kurz nach ihrem Umzug nach Los Angeles im Alter von 20 Jahren gelang ihr in den USA der Durchbruch. Jetzt ist sie bei einem neuen Label unter Vertrag und startet mit ihrem neuen Song „Future Starts Now“ durch. Eigentlich ein Wahnsinn, dass sie bei den VMAs performt hat!

Die Moderatorin des Abends war Doja Cat. Kennt hier auch nicht jeder. Ihr Song „Say So“ wurde auf TikTok zum viralen Hit und machte sie zum Superstar. Ihr aktuelles Album „Planet Her“ wurde von Fans und Kritikern hoch gefeiert. Sagen wir es so: was 2011/2012 noch Nicki Minaj war, ist heute Doja Cat.

Auch die Performerin Chlöe ist ein Phänomen. Unter den Fittichen von Beyoncé und Jay-Z ist sie in den USA eher mit ihrer Schwester als Duo Chloe & Hall bekannt. Nun startet Chlöe Solo durch und hat sich vom Engel in einen Vamp verwandelt (lieben wir!). Es gab viel Kritik für ihr neues Image und das Video zu „Have Mercy“, doch es rechte am Ende dann doch für die VMA Main Stage.

Normani sollte man ebenfalls auf dem Schirm haben. Sie war ein Teil der durchaus erfolgreichen Girl Group Fifth Harmony, aus der auch Camila Cabello hervorging. Normani wurde oftmals als neue Ciara / Beyoncé gefeiert und Fans entfachten einen regelrechten Shitstorm, als MTV sie nicht als Performerin für dieses Jahr ankündigte. Das ganze ging so weit, dass der Sender sie dann doch im Line Up der Show aufnahm. Ihre Performance beweist, warum sie es mehr als verdient hat.

Die großen Weltstars aus den guten „alten Zeiten“ waren auch dabei

Kommen wir noch kurz zu den altbekannten Stars. Ed Sheeran performte seinen neuen Song, der am Freitag erschienen war. Zeitgleich mit der neuen Alicia Keys Single, die sie ebenfalls performte. Rap-Ikone Busta Rhymes performte ein Medley seiner größten Hits und auch die Rock-Ikonen Foo Fighters warne auf der VMA Bühne. Apropos Rock. Weitere Performer waren Machine Gun Kelly und Twenty One Pilots.

Es gab auch dieses Jahr keine Skandale, doch nachdem auch die VMAs letztes Jahr eine Covid-Variante ohne Publikum und Pre-Recordings durchleben mussten, war diese Live-Show aus New York zumindest wieder ein Hauch von Pre-Corona.
