Am Freitag (07.01.22) ist das neue Album vom Megastar The Weeknd „Dawn FM“ erschienen. Dabei handelt es sich um ein Konzeptalbum, das das Radioprogramm für unser Leben nach dem Tod ist. Leitet der Hitmaker damit sein eigenes Ende ein?

Ich gebe es zu, ich bin gar nicht mal so der krasse The Weeknd Fan. Seine Anfänge waren sehr spannend, bis er irgendwann etwas belanglos und fast langweilig wurde. Das lag sicherlich auch an dem Hype, der sich schlecht mit dem Image des Sängers vereinbaren ließ. Seine Super Bowl Halftime Show im letzten Jahr war ebenfalls alles andere, als atemberaubend und so war ich mir nicht sicher, ob ein weiteres Album so wirklich relevant werden könnte, nachdem „After Hours“ so unfassbar erfolgreich war.

Doch „Dawn FM“ ist genau das. Relevant und wegweisend. Auch wenn die Referenzen in der Vergangenheit, genauer gesagt in den 80ern, liegen. Es ist ein Konzeptalbum mit Ideen über das Leben nach dem Tod. Das Intro lässt sich dabei perfekt auf das aktuelle Zeitgeschehen mit Pandemie, Lockdown & Co. übertragen: „Du warst viel zu lange im Dunkeln, es ist Zeit, ins Licht zu treten“, heißt es im eröffnende Titelsong. „Bald wirst du geheilt, vergeben und erfrischt sein, frei von allen Traumata, Schmerzen, Schuldgefühlen und Scham – vielleicht vergisst du sogar deinen Namen.“

Das Album ist gespickt mit Stargästen. Die Erzählung zwischen den Tracks wird von Jim Carrey bereitgestellt. Quincy Jones spricht über die psychische Erkrankung seiner Mutter und deren Auswirkungen auf seine Beziehungen. „Here We Go… Again“ vereint Tyler, the Creator und den 79-jährigen Beach Boy Bruce Johnston. Die unfassbaren Sounds kommen u.a. von Max Martin und der Swedish House Mafia. Die Einflüsse sind ebenfalls klar zu hören. Hier etwas Barry White, da ein wenig Prince, als auch Marc Bolan. Und natürlich Michael Jackson, mit dem The Weeknd klanglich immer wieder verglichen wird.

Nicht von dieser Welt

Das Album ist nicht nur brillant geschrieben, produziert und gesungen. Es entführt den Hörer in eine andere Welt. Eben die Welt danach. Was auch immer das für einen persönlich bedeuten mag. Wenn man sich auf „Dawn FM“ einlässt, was als Radiosender aufgebaut ist, bleibt jede Melodie kleben und jede Idee funktioniert. So z.B. der unfassbare Übergang von „How Do I Make You Love Me“ zu „Take My Breath“. Gepaart mit der Faszination der 80er, die ihn als Ausnahmetalent schon immer begleitet haben, kommt hier alles zusammen und bietet ein beinahe perfektes Album.

Leitet er hiermit sein Ende ein?

Am Ende verlässt man „Dawn FM“ mit dem einzigen Song, auf dem der Interpret selbst nicht zu hören ist. Und das ist auch der Song, der den stärksten emotionalen Eindruck hinterlässt. Wenn es hier nach 52 Minuten Musik wieder still wird und Jim Carrey das Album zu Abschluss bringt, ist man beeindruckt und mitgenommen. Man könnte fast schon auf die Idee kommen, dass das die Beerdigung von The Weeknd sei. Vielleicht soll das Jenseitsthema des Albums ein Hinweis darauf sein, dass die Figur das Ende erreicht hat und dass Abel Tesfaye – der in Interviews davon gesprochen hat „The Weeknd“ aus der Welt entfernen – mit diesem Album sein Ende verkündet? Wenn dem so ist, ist das eine fantastische Art und Weise, dies zu tun. / Berry
